Suzi turns 2 today. It’s hard to believe we are already on issue 4! We have come such a long way. When Suzi was first created, she was a digital doodle, a cutout for testing lighting and style. She has grown into so much more, a fully realized character. It’s been a wild ride so far, but the best is yet to come! Thanks so much for stopping by!

Moving pictures!
This is a quick test of the ship’s computer screens. You can see where I have set all the screens to a magenta color to help me replace them in the compositing program. The beauty of this workflow allows me to render all the way up to a 4K frame (that is, a super HD image of 4000 pixels!). It’s taken me a bit to get to this point, but I am starting to see some real progress in the look of the cartoon. Once the screens are done, I am ready to start animating!

Sunday Science: Touchdown to blast-off!
I read a great story about a former NFL’er who really lived the dream. NPR has a great write up on astronaut Leland Melvin and his journey from the NFL to going to space. It’s a fascinating read and a great example of a man having the discipline and focus to plan his future.

Infinity Wars anyone?
I got to playing the F2P TCG Infinity Wars. I was a huge MtG guy way back when, but when I saw the expansions as a bottomless money pit, I bailed.
I play Hearthstone and enjoy it, but the mechanics of this game are very subtle in some areas. I am liking it so far. If you play, look for jaheath and we’ll play a match or two…

Sunday Science: How *did* we find the distance to the Sun?
It’s been a while since we had a Sunday Science, so here we go! This is a fascinating article that Universe Today shared today.
Spoiler: Math is amazing!

New look for a new year!
I kicked 2015 off with a much needed overhaul of the site. There are a few links that still need wiring up, but I wanted to start 2015 on the run. A lot of exciting changes are coming this year, so let’s get the show on the road. The comic will resume on Jan 20th, so until then enjoy the all access to the behind the scenes making of the Suzi Quazar Animated Series!

Retro style Suzi
I have been kicking around alot of stylistic considerations for the animated series, and I am really leaning towards a retro 80’s styling in the series. I hacked this poster together from some tutorials on the net. I think it fits the bill. I will be updating Radio Cosmos with some new retro wave soon!

Suzi’s control rig
Here is the initial facial rig for Suzi. What this does is allow me to quickly pose her. I needed the make the controls clear and quick for me to use, since I am a one man shop. Anything I can do to reduce the time it takes me to animate her is critical. This is my first custom rig, so I consider it still a work in progress.
